Botánica de Dolores Prida y Dirigida por Kivin Bauzo

Dolores Prida was a feminist and Hispanic dramatist whose central theme was the search for the identity of Latino/Hispanic immigrants, specifically women, in the United States.

She was known as the Cubarican, born in Cuba but also well versed in Puerto Rican culture, learned in New York, she wrote this play, La Botánica, with all Puerto Rican (Nuyorican) characters.

La Botánica explores cultural conflicts in East Harlem among an old Puerto Rican woman, her daughter, and her granddaughter, who has just graduated from an Ivy League university. The old woman, Doña Geno, runs a business dealing in herbs, spells, and spiritual powers. She and her daughter, Anamu, expect Anamu's daughter, Milagros Castillo, to take over the shop, La Ceiba.

But, Milagros -- who began calling herself Millie at college, since, as she says, Miracles Castle isn't a great name in English -- plans to take up a career in a big bank downtown and forget about the barrio. But she has things to learn that the Ivy League doesn't teach, and Doña Geno is just the professor she needs.

Trouble In Mind a Production by Seat of The Pants

TROUBLE IN MIND

by Alice Childress

This 1955 classic wasn't produced on Broadway until 2021, since the playwright held firm to her convictions about its content and ending.

Set during rehearsals for a major Broadway production, TROUBLE IN MIND illuminates the inner life of a Black actress struggling with her career. As Wiletta grapples with how she's treated, the role she's being asked to play, and what the production says (or doesn't) about race in America, her growing discomfort sets off a chain of events that reveal fissures within the acting company — and bring her into conflict with her director. Who will prevail? Find out as Seat of the Pants presents Alice Childress' 1955 play which didn't premiere on Broadway until 2021: a funny, satirical, moving, and heartbreaking look at racism, identity, and ego in the high stakes world of New York theatre.

Directed by Jeannine Gaskin and produced by Craig Joseph, the production stars Elizabeth Domer, Andrew Knode, Madison Ledyard-King, Michael Montanus, Zyrece Montgomery, Tom Stephan, Nicole Sumlin*, Darryl Tatum, and Tom Woodward*.

Sam Landgraf stage-manages, with costume design by Marti Coles, lighting design by Ayron Lord, props design by Mia Jones, sound design by Aria Smith, and scenic construction by Christian Sanko.

CCONTENT ADVISORY: mild profanity, racist remarks and language, descriptions of racial violence

TROUBLE IN MIND is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. — www.concordtheatricals.com

  • CSU Middough Building, BlackBox Theater (5th floor) (map)

Tropic Macbeth is an original story based on 'The tragedy of Macbeth' by William Shakespeare. Although the basic plot remains close to the original - a tragedy of murder and political ambition, this adaptation, set in the 1935 Caribbean, has a Different story and new characters. This is a story of strong women, and how they use men to achieve power, justice, and revenge. The decades-long hatred between the Orillan and Doncan families explodes when "La Dama Macbeth" (Lady Macbeth), uses her husband, the commander Macbeth, in a Machiavellian plan to overthrow the Doncan regime and reinstate the the Orillan to their orginal power.

LatinUs’ adaptation was created, written, and designed by John Rivera-Resto. This scene is a murder scene with blood and gore (recommended ages 18+).

This scene will be presented at the Borderlight Fringe Festival on August 4th and 5th at the CSU Middough Building Black Box Theater (5th Floor). Tickets are available at https://www.borderlightcle.org/doncans-execution-a-scene-from-tropico-macbeth-by-john-rivera-resto/.

Is it almost Christmas, what happens when a group of Mexican angels have to help Mary and Joseph to get safely to the manger so that the baby Jesus is born and a group of little devils, also Mexicans, make life impossible for them through of a bet to avoid it?

Well, a mess of the devil, Sorry (the sign of the cross.)

We will laugh out loud while a heavenly or earthly battle takes place between angels and devils to see who wins the bet.

And then. What happened in the 1940s, in a Puerto Rico neighborhood called Cuchilla, Saint Claus was not known, but only the Three Wise Men and a young teacher from Nueva Yol decided to change the tradition?

Oh, blessed Santa Clo is going to have to run for his life!!

The work recounts the events that happens in Bogota during November 1986 when the terrorist group M-19 took the justice palace since from the perspective of ordinary people. Julieta Marín, a young law student who works to pay for her studies as a cashier in the Palace of Justice cafeteria, never appeared among the survivors and the dead of the takeover. The disappearance unleashes chaos, fears and repression of the tenants of the house: Sergio, a waiter with clown skills, and Victoria, his wife, who make up the passionate knot of the story, Carlos, a usurer who negotiates with desperation of the others, Humberto, a confused young man who cannot overcome his lack of maturity, and Lucía, the mother, owner of the house, a woman who falls into the web of madness since the disappearance of her daughter, become victims. of a foreign and own war at the same time. They give color to the country's flag, personifying the imaginary of any Colombian who faces political conflicts and who is not necessarily aware of them, who experiences his desires and frustrations in the midst of the turbulent social changes of the time.

Two beings, among the many that make up humanity without having a story, the caretaker and the user of a public bathroom, find themselves in this neglected and adverse space marked by abandonment, and establish a counterpoint between those who wish to take advantage of the need of others to profit from them and who believes in the common good. An eminently theatrical and imaginative script, a curious debtor of both absurdity and realism, it exhibits a dialogue full of wit, tinged with humor, irony, and sarcasm, and constitutes a sharp satire of contemporary Cuban reality. For ages 16+.
Directed by Mónica Torres.

Tickets are non-refundable. Covid vaccine or negative test in previous 72 hrs of event is required.
